Internet FAQ 019 - How do
I check my connection using PING?
The following suggests trouble shooting
you may wish to perform if your internet connection is not working.
In writing this FAQ, we assume that
nothing has changed as far as machine setup or hardware.
A simple test to check
your internet connection is to ping a domain name from the DOS
box.
To run up a DOS box in any of the Microsoft Windows operating
systems
Select Start -
Run
Type command <Enter>
A DOS box should be displayed |

| In the DOS box type
ping
flexisoft.com
(or any other domain name) |
| If the connection is
working you should see something similar to the following output
Pinging flexisoft.com
[216.157.11.111] with 32 bytes of data:
Reply from 216.157.11.111: bytes=32 time=80ms TTL=245
Reply from 216.157.11.111: bytes=32 time=50ms TTL=245
Reply from 216.157.11.111: bytes=32 time=60ms TTL=245
Reply from 216.157.11.111: bytes=32 time=50ms TTL=245
Ping statistics for 216.157.11.111:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 50ms, Maximum = 80ms, Average = 60ms |
| If the connection is
NOT working you will see something similar to the following output
Pinging 216.157.11.111 with 32
bytes of data:
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Request timed out.
Ping statistics for 216.157.11.111:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 0ms, Maximum = 0ms, Average = 0ms

| If the domain name (in
this case flexisoft.com) can not be resolved you will get a single
line saying
Unknown host flexisoft.com
If this happens try pinging the IP
address if you know it. |
If necessary copy the output of the ping to the clip board and
paste it into an email to
support@flexisoft.com. We will try and interpret the output.
Try pinging your domain a number of times
