Internet FAQ 015 - How do I test my Cable/DSL Router is working?

The following suggests trouble shooting you may wish to perform if your internet connection is not working.

In writing this FAQ, we assume that nothing has changed as far as machine setup or hardware.

Your Cable/DSL Router will look something like the following

You can check if your Cable/DSL router is working correctly from the lights on the front. Each port will have a number of green and/or orange lights.  If these are steady then the router is probably working OK.  If the lights of all the ports are flashing in synchronization then there could be a problem. Additionally if a red error light is displayed then there could be a problem.

If it is suspected that there is a problem then it is worth restarting the Cable/DLS router

Locate the power cable in the back of the Cable/DSL router and remove it.  Wait one minute then reconnect it.

Wait one further minute and for the Cable/DSL router to restart

Check the lights once more they should now all be stable.
