EMAIL FAQ 012 - How do I adjust my spam filtering?

You can adjust your spam filtering using your online SmarterMail settings. When set, these settings will apply to your email as it enters your mail box. I.e. it will be filtered both when you read email online and through Outlook or Outlook Express.

Log into SmarterMail (see FAQ 006)

Select Settings | My Spam Filtering

You can either use the predefined settings or over ride them with your own.

Figure 2

The default settings are displayed in the box below

Figure 3

A number of filters are used to determine if each piece of email is spam or not. Each time an email matches a particular filter it gives it 10 points. Spam is evaluated on the scale

  • LOW = 10 points
  • MEDIUM = 20 points
  • HIGH = 30 points

The higher the points the more likely that the email is spam.

The default settings shown above delete any email that scores 20 or more points. However you can over ride these settings

Selecting "Override spam settings for this account" in figure 2 above will display the following screen

Figure 4

You can then select your own action for each spam rating.

  • Delete message
  • Move to Junk Email Folder
  • Add text to subject line

After making the changes remember to press the save button

One further setting...
There may be cases where an item of email comes from a domain that you know is friendly and not spam. However it gets identified incorrectly as spam.  To prevent this happening you can define domains or email addresses that by pass the spam filter and are always considered acceptable email.  Simply add these addresses to the Trusted Senders list.
